WSE will support the Barcelona Use Case in collaboration with CTTC and FGC. The two main contributions of WSE within this proposal are:
Imec performs world-leading research in nanoelectronics and leverages its scientific knowledge with the innovative power of its global partnerships in ICT, healthcare and energy. Imec is an independent research center, founded by the Belgian Flemish Government in 1984. The Department of Information Technology (INTEC) of Ghent University (UGent) acts as an associated division of IMEC since 1984. As from October 1, 2016, imec merged with iMinds, resulting in one of the largest digital ICT research institutes in Europe. The imec-IDLab Design research group in this proposal is very active in optoelectronic front-end and (sub-) system design since the early nineties. The IDLab-Design group is currently one of the leading groups in the research and development of high-speed, low-power transmitter and receiver integrated circuits for next generation transport, metro, access, datacenter and radio-over-fiber networks. Developments are ongoing in the frame of H2020 (Flex5Gware, Teraboard, Streams, WIPE, Optima and 5GPHOS, QAMeleon, ERC ATTO). In Nov. 2014, the Design group was awarded the 3rd biannual Greentouch 1000x award together with Bell Labs/Alcatel-Lucent and Orange Labs
In Int5Gent, the imec-IDLab Design group will be responsible for the design, prototyping and testing of the Multi-stream Sigma-delta modulated radio over fiber transmission. IMEC will extend its current single-stream FPGA-based prototypes to support multi-stream transmission. Furthermore, it will develop specialized clock-and-data recovery circuits, which are optimized for recovering a low phase noise clock from a sigma-delta stream. As such, the recovered clock can be reused for frequency conversion and specialized jitter cleaning can be removed. This clock can also be reused for sampling the uplink signal using an integrated return path. These innovations will significantly simplify the overall remote radio units. These designs will be built further on the work that has been performed in the H2020 ERC project “ATTO” and its derived proof of concept project “BI-SDMoF”. The developments are planned in task T3.x and will be integrated in the baseband unit and remote radio unit in tasks T3.x and T3.x respectively.

AUTH will contribute to Int5Gent by developing and demonstrating Fiber Wireless small cell network architectures relying on reconfigurable optical fronthaul interfaces and millimeter Wave antennas. More specifically, AUTH will experimentally evaluate demonstrate analog radio over fiber transmissions towards multi-element 60GHz antennas to demonstrate Point to MultiPoint Fiber Wireless links with beamsteering or isotropic transmission functionalities for ubiquitous 90o-degree sectorial coverage, as well as four optical multiplexed WDM RoF transmissions for full cycle 360o-degree sectorial coverage. AUTH will also implement multi-wavelength Fiber Wireless transmissions using Int5Gent transmission formats, transmitted and reconfigurably Added or Dropped by a low-loss mini ROADM, in order to demonstrated co-existence of all interfaces and fronthaul traffic in a unified and reconfigurable transport node. AUTH will also develop and evaluate a flexible any-to-any interconnect architecture for fronthaul networks based on an all-passive AWGR, interconnecting any Edge Base Band Processor interface to any antenna site, while demonstrating bandwidth steering to a congested antenna site by wavelength tuning multiple transceivers so as to steer and multiplex more than one fronthaul channel as a MIMO antenna site. Finally, AUTH will evaluate the scalability of the proposed reconfigurable fronthaul network through experimentally verified circuit level simulation, to accommodate the expansion studies and deployment scenarios.

The main contributions of CTTC in INT5GENT will be related to two different aspects: the transport SDN controller and the ADRENALINE testbed. The first is an evolved form of an SDN controller that is able to configure and monitor all the optical/packet transport network in order to manage the overall life cycle of the connectivity services. Regarding the testbed, its main duty will be to incorporate part of the technologies developed in the proposal in order to support the use case dealing with monitoring, maintenance and emergency response services for critical infrastructures (physical railway infrastructure).
Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) was founded in 1979 to operate two historical lines with their origins in 1863 in the introduction of the Barcelona – Sarrià suburban train service. Over the years, new lines have been added to FGC and these historical lines have been improved and have grown with new passenger and freight services in Barcelona and the surrounding areas. This continuous growth, together with the diversification of the business into other sectors such as leisure and tourism, has made us an efficient public company distinguished by its high quality of service and efficiency in infrastructure management and transport operation:
– 82 million passengers/year and freight transport.
– Workforce over 1800.
– 1301 circulations per day with minimum frequency of 112” in Barcelona-Vallès line.
– Rail network stretching over 290 km of track with international, narrow and Iberian gauges.
– 107 stations.
– The only 2 rack railways existing of Spain.
– 4 funicular cable cars.
– Tourist activities: 47 ski lifts and 146 km of ski runs.
The two main railway lines, Barcelona – Vallès (BV) and Llobregat – Anoia (LLA), have metro services inside Barcelona city and commuter services with Barcelona surrounding areas. BV has 53 km of double track with international gauge, 46 passenger trains, 62 million passengers per year and 32 trains at peak hour with a frequency of 112”. LLA has 140 km of double and single track in some sections with metric gauge, 42 passenger trains, 22 million passengers per year and freight transport. FGC has 100% of their installations adapted to people with reduced mobility.
Regarding freight transport FGC is an important local operator which manages transport of mining products from Suria mine to Bacelona Port, new vehicles from SEAT factory and Bacerlona Port, and car pieces between Barcelona Port and SEAT factory.
FGC does and manages infrastructure and rolling stock maintenance. There are two workshops with one of them approved for interoperable equipment maintenance.
FGC is member of the International Suburban Rail Benchmarking Group (ISBeRG http://www.isberg-web.org/), a prestigious program led by Imperial College of London. This program monitors and evaluates the efficiency of 16 worldwide operators using 27 Key Performance Indicators. During the 4 years of study FGC appears first, second or third in the 10 main indicators:
– FGC is first in: revenue train hours per driver hour, peak fleet availability and total injures per pax journey.
– FGC is second in: train delay per operated train, trains operated on time per trains operated, overall reliability, pax journeys on time per pax journeys.
– FGC is third in: trains actually operated per trains scheduled, rolling stock reliability, trains service operation cost per train hour.
